Providing Comprehensive and Valuable Diagnoses

Understanding the mechanisms that underlie the microbiome dysbiosis and correcting the deficiencies that trigger these disorders require in-depth examinations of the intestinal microbiome. Using the latest generation methodologies has become mandatory for people’s health in modern medicine. Malta-based The BioArte is breaking new grounds in biomolecular research through its high specialisation on the microbiota. In-depth knowledge, cutting edge technology, and a team that is consistently up to date with the latest in scientific research represent the DNA of The BioArte.

Not only does The BioArte carry out the main aspect of its business through its research centre and diagnostic unit, but the firm also has an educational institute through which it grants degrees and educates people on the latest innovations. This dynamic trinity helps The BioArte lead innovations and promote new approaches that serve people better. The company’s founders, Dr. Manuele Biazzo and Christian Duchow, have joined forces to provide a strong diagnostic tool based on NGS solutions to produce new therapeutic approaches. “We are mainly active in the microbiome field, but of course, with the same equipment and structure, we also work in human genetics,” states Dr. Manuele Biazzo, CEO of The BioArte.

The firm has invested highly into the quality of its tests to provide a complete and clear picture of the bacteria populating the intestine or any other region one may need to check while verifying a patient’s health status. The in depth and detailed information aids patients and doctors alike to plan out therapy.

“Our diagnostic tool can monitor the global balance of your microbial community and can detect any pathogen you may have,” adds Dr. Biazzo. This broad range of information helps doctors prescribe treatment on a more personalised level.

For instance, a patient was suffering from gastric issues and experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort while being treated with pump inhibitors. Initially, this approach was able to eliminate the problem momentarily. Still, after a certain time, she was diagnosed with similar issues and continuously treated under pharmaceutical methods, leading to side effects. She decided to check the microbiota level and contacted The BioArte through her doctor. The BioArte performed the analysis and found out that she completely lacked the lactobacillus genus in her intestines. Moreover, The BioArte observed that the patient had bacterial disbalances that caused inflammation. The doctor then suggested a completely new diet to reduce the reaction and integrate it with the genus of the bacteria population that was absent. “We give the doctor or the nutritionist a possibility to prepare a treatment for the patient based on real results,” asserts Dr. Biazzo.

In the market, there are several tools, but The BioArte prefers to develop its in-house pipeline and a better version of what is currently available. The company has hired the best scientists and invested significantly to improve the quality of a service that can be legally performed without any accreditation. However, the firm ensured to be a valid lab and obtained its Medical Diagnostic Licence and ISO accreditation after rigorously working for two years before placing its microbiome screening service in the market. “We also work on the pharmacogenomic testing specifically for the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic genetic variation as well as on metabolising certain drugs,” adds Dr. Biazzo.

The BioArte has worked on sequencing the Maltese lineage of COVID-19 in summer 2021, and, recently, the firm published a paper in the American Journal of Microbiology. Using its internal resources and profit margins, the company has invested in research and performed epidemiological work beforehand to track the new variants. “This is our approach towards using the research for the benefit of the scientific community providing value to the market,” says Dr. Biazzo. The BioArte has collaborated with several important clinical establishments such as Southampton hospital (UK) or Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù (Italy) and has accumulated data linked to discovering new biomarkers for various diseases. As a growth measure, the firm intends to continue its research activities, discover new tools, and place them in the market both as a diagnostic solution and as a product.
